At the age of 12, Lisa Goldstein was pulled into a home birth in Naples, Italy, by the apartment custodian’s family.  She was needed to support the solitary midwife who needed another pair of hands. This set a life path that led to her being the only lay midwife recognized to practice by the North Carolina State Board of Nursing after lay midwives were outlawed in 1983.   

Opening with Lisa’s own story of this journey, and spanning a career of 4,000 births, this book is filled with accounts from some of the mothers, doctors, nurses, friends, and family speaking to the impact one woman had on their lives. Anyone interested in birth will be inspired by these stories.
